Guidance on 3RR

Today, in my work editing Hurricane Milton, I made a total of five reverts to the page in 24 hours (00z 7 October to 00z 8 October). See 1, 2, 3. 4, and 5. While two were reversions of uncited material and one was a reversion of vandalism, the question came to mind: could I, in full good faith and by no means intentional, have broken the 3 revert rule on this page? Of my two content reversions, one was reverted right back before a third user reverted that. I should also note there had been a great deal of time between the reversions, and all the content reverted was on different content. I'm just looking for a bit of guidance before I make a fool out of myself; could I, had two other content disputes occurred, been in proper violation of the 3RR, even if, from my perspective, I by no means was I edit warring? Note also the page had received close to 175 edits in that same time period. GeorgeMemulous (talk) 00:06, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

3RR applies to more than 3 reverts on the same page within 24 hours, and there are various exemptions, including removal of vandalism.

Although the Rule is strictly stated, I think allowances would be made when the reverter is making single reversions of multiple edits by multiple users rather than re-re-reverting the same edit(s), and where some of the edits are vandalism, and when the subject is fast moving and information in sources may be changing and contradictory.

Unless an Administrator gives you a warning (an immediate block seems to me unlikely), I don't think you need to worry. However, it would be nice if an Administrator experienced in this matter gave us some authoritative advice here.

Disambiguation or primary topic?

I was looking for Perfect Night (Le Sserafim song) when I typed Perfect Night into the search bar. For most readers, this isn't the right subject (look at the page views). What would the best course of action here? win8x (talking | spying) 01:46, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

Since the title "Perfect Night" will be usurped either way, you might as well start a requested move of Perfect Night to Perfect Night (Peter Andre song). WP:RM is usually the place where primary topics are decided. jlwoodwa (talk) 03:42, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

@Win8x: The Peter Andre song is obviously not primary so I have moved Perfect Night to Perfect Night (Peter Andre song) and updated incoming links. I converted Perfect Night to a disambiguation page with three entries and listed the Le Sserafim song first but that song could also have been the primary topic. My edit to Candidates for Queensland Election webpage.

@Murray Peterson: This is most likely because you're adding information about yourself, which is a conflict of interest. Revision of edit by apparent sock-puppet and threat.

Hello, I recently made an edit to a page to fix the formatting of a section. Within two minutes, my revision was reverted and someone called "Adriana Nader" posted a message saying: "This is your only warning; if you vandalize Wikipedia again, as you did at Hermann Göring, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. Adriana Nader (talk) 05:17, 8 October 2024 (UTC)" There was no vandalism; no information was added or deleted; only the formatting was changed to better present the information.

On looking at the person's user page, I found that it was created at the same time as the edit reversion, and has already been tagged with the note: "This user page may meet Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion as a page created by a banned or blocked user" and on the talk page, it says "This account has been blocked indefinitely as a sockpuppet that was created to violate Wikipedia policy."

Can I (a) remove the so-called warning from the User talk page for this IP address and (b) revert my edit back? Also, could someone explain why someone would apparently create a sockpuppet account solely to go after a single, non-substantive edit?

Per WP:BRV you can revert edits by blocked users with no further reason. Feel free to remove the warning as well. The sock was reverting random recent edits at a rapid pace - not just yours. FifthFive (talk) 05:50, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

Circular crop

@CanonNi:Probably not. Doing a crop inside the server every time an image is served is a little bit server-intensive in the first place, so it is deprecated. This is even more true for non-rectangular cropping. Best practice would be to download the image to you computer and then use image-processing software (e.g., the GIMP) to crop it, and then upload the result as a new image, making sure to attribute the old image. -Arch dude (talk) 15:21, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

How to make a citation whilst editing infobox?

First see Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Infoboxes#References in infoboxes for whether to make a reference at all (not how to do it). You have used VisualEditor which has a tool to add references but it doesn't work inside infoboxes and other template calls. You can write the source code for the reference inside the parameter value in VisualEditor but it may be difficult if you haven't tried references in source code. See Help:Referencing for beginners with citation templates. Another option is to make the reference somewhere outside the infobox, switch to the source editor on the pencil icon at the top right, and move the reference code to an infobox parameter. Removing stub class – actions?

Hi, when removing stub class from an article, Wikipedia:Stub says "When removing stub templates, users should also visit the talk page and update the WikiProject classifications as necessary." I'm not sure how to interpret that "as necessary" correctly. Is it editing {{WikiProject banner shell|class=Stub}} and removing |class=Stub? Or replacing that with something else? Need help in blocking a collection of IP adresses

on the si.wikipedia.org recently many uses in ip addresses have started removing interwiki links from articles. it has gotten out of hand. the admins have blocked them individually with 1 day expiration. but as soon as one is blocked, same edits are done in a different ip. is there anyway to find if they are from the same ip block, if so can they be blocked forever from editing? its very hard to go track down all of their disruptive edits in articles.

I seem to have broken my user talk page using the archive bot

I was attempting to create yearly archives however after the bot ran and created the pages, none of the created talk pages link correctly and my talk page doesn't link to the archives. How do I fix this situation? As can be seen at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Ergzay the Archives list shows no archives, and the archive pages at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Ergzay/Archives/2022 have broken headers that don't link to anything. @Ergzay: Place {{Annual archive|root=User talk:Ergzay|prefix=Archives/}} at top of the archive pages. I have tried to automate it for future archives.[1] It's possible the next visit by the archive bot will build an index with archive links for display in the archive box at User talk:Ergzay. Updating the map

Remove accidental italicization of page title

Made a new page regarding a famous murder trial in Wyoming, at "Trial of Ed Cantrell", but the page title itself is italicized, was looking how to undue that so it would be similar to the trial of Imelda Marcos or trial of George Zimmerman in plain text without italicization. Reporting Someone

Many people here try to propagate false information by adding biased or wrong content by adding or removing some lines of wikipedia page. So give me some suggestions so that I can take an action to those editors. Callmehelper (talk) 17:57, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

Take it to WP:AIV if it's clearly vandalism, or WP:ANI if it's a more complicated issue that still needs intervention. GeorgeMemulous (talk) 18:04, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

As a first step, assuming what they're doing is unambiguously problematic but not necessarily occurring multiple times, you should likely warn them. Reporting an editor without reaching out to them to advise them that their edits are disruptive can be considered bad-faith. Hello, Callmehelper. One of the core principles of Wikipedia is to assume good faith. When somebody makes an edit that you think is wrong, most of the time they are doing so because they think their edit is an improvement. The thing to do then is to open a discussion with them - and a stance of "I am right and you are wrong, so there!" is not a good starting point for a discussion. If you cannot reach consensus, then please look at dispute resolution.

Only if it is clear that a person's behaviour is damaging to Wikipedia (and not just holding a different view from you) should you even think of "reporting" them.

Yeah. I chat with him. Instead he should be understood, he claimed me that I am disruptive and violate wikipedia guidelines. Believe me I am as accurate as anyone can be here with original facts that are available. For example if any politician speak something but wikipedia written his one or two lines of that speech that misleading the whole point so what I do is just adding some more lines of that speech which is originally available and authentic. Even in that wikipedia page context some more talk of that speech should be there. But he claimed me that I am disruptive n all twice the time as I reverted when he removed that additional part.

If you can't agree, please follow the steps in WP:dispute resolution.

Be careful to watch out for original research. If a politician has been reliably reported as saying something, a Wikipedia article can say that they have said it, citing that source. But it cannot say anything at all about what they meant, or the reasons they said it, or what the effect was of them saying it, unless they are paraphrasing what a single reliable published source has said about it - and preferably, a source wholly unconnected with the politician in question. Best way to combine references

At Reem Kassis I've got:

NPR, The Guardian, The Independent, New York Magazine, Buzzfeed, San Francisco Chronicle, The National Post, Saveur Magazine, Departures, and Milk Street listed it among the best cookbooks published in 2017.

Which seems like overkill. I'd like to change this to something like

Multiple outlets, including NPR, New York Magazine, The Independent, and Saveur, named the book to their best-of lists for 2017.

Obviously I don't need that many citations, but ideally I'd like to not to lose the sources. Is there a template that is best to use? Thanks for any help! Valereee (talk) 19:32, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

On 8th October I was checking Tim Minchin who had his birthday yesterday and was born in 1975 but his age shows as 48 not 49;

Birth name Timothy David Minchin Born 7 October 1975 (age 48)

I have now checked others born on 7th October ; Birth name Salman Butt / Born 7 October 1984 (age 39) Birth name Nicole Ari Parker / Born October 7, 1970 (age 53)

BUT the 6th and the 8th show correctly ; Birth name Amy Jo Johnson / Born October 6, 1970 (age 54) Birth name Tetsuya Nomura / Born October 8, 1970 (age 54)

I see from the page editor that age is calculated so what is wrong with 7th October ??

@WikiIan: The rendered version of pages are cached on our servers for performance reasons. The age was sometimes computed before the birthday and cached with the rest of the page. You can purge an article to force an update right away. Otherwise it usually happens automatically within a day or two. It doesn't work to bypass your own browser cache. Never any mention of whodunnit, IP? It was wrong because you had just got it wrong. And you would have read {{cite news}}: Check date values in: |date= (help) (though in different colors), which unsurprisingly means that the values (or value) provided for "date" were (or was) unusable. ​​ The above was explained to this user several months back at User talk:115.70.23.77#Help Desk questions, but it seems to have been going on for years. For awhile the questions stopped so I assumed they just figured things out; recently, though, they've started back up again essentially posting the same type of "Please fix this. I don't know what's wrong" questions as before. In most cases, these appear to be self-inflicted wounds that could easily be avoided if the user just slowed down and checked their edits before clicking "Publish changes". Errors in reference citation syntax are, I'm pretty sure, indicated at the top of the editing window after clicking "Show preview"; so, it doesn't seem to be too much to ask for this user check their work and then fix things themselves. Everyone makes mistakes and everyone needs help every now and then, but this has become too regular of an occurrence (at least in my opinion) and isn't inspiring confidence in this user's ability to avoid making similar mistakes moving forward.

Another issue is that they also seem to be constantly switching between editing while logged in and editing while logged out. While this isn't expressly prohibited per se, it too seems to have been going on for years, and there's no indication of it stopping anytime soon despite this user having already been blocked once for inappropriately using multiple accounts. At some point, people might start to question whether this user really has the competence to edit, and whether whatever positives they may be providing to the project outweigh their apparent inability to learn from their mistakes. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:23, 9 October 2024 (UTC)

Hi, this is a general question on which I'd be grateful for some input.

One piece of information that COI users (whether disclosed or undisclosed) often want to include into their articles are lists of awards. Sometimes these awards are clearly significant (such as those which already have Wikipedia articles of their own), sometimes they clearly are not (such as local awards, awards that were awarded to large numbers of individuals (or companies) every year, industry awards which are sometimes no more than paid-for accolades, etc.).

Distinguishing between the two categories above is often rather difficult and would require significant industry knowledge or academic awareness of the relevant field, which will often be beyond the ability of the average volunteer, even after conducting a Google search for the relevant award.

My question is whether there are any guidelines on what type of awards can and can't included in an article, beyond those contained in the draft proposal here [4] or (if not) any general principles that can be applied when dealing with COI edit requests to include such material. Also, what is the exact status of the draft proposal in terms of whether the contents can be implemented without objection?

To give an example, the proposal states The absolute minimum standard for inclusion of any award or accolade in an article or list is: The award or accolade must have been reported in a reliable source independent of the recipient or promoters of the award. In my experience, if that principle were to be universally applied it would result in the removal of the great majority of industry/academic awards currently detailed in Wikipedia articles.

If I'm working on a biography, I'll mention or list any notable awards that they've won. I won't list anything else, partly out of respect for the subject. Learning that someone won the Mrs Joyful Prize for Raffia Work will not create a good impression in readers.

Even worse is listing not-notable awards that they were considered or shortlisted for but not awarded. The inclusion of these suggests that the creator of the article suspects that the subject isn.t really notable, and is "scraping the bottom of the barrel". Maproom (talk) 07:39, 9 October 2024 (UTC)

I suppose the grey area that I referred to above relates primarily to awards that fall below the level at which the award might have its own Wikipedia article, but where it still may feasibly be of a significant nature in a particular field.

Re: "scraping the bottom of the barrel" to bolster dodgy subject notability, I do agree but I feel that a lot of COI activity is essentially an extension of the subject's vanity. However, just because the subject is vain doesn't mean that some of the awards they've won might not be of significance in their field.

Many academics, for example, are easily notable under WP:PROF despite never having won any type of award. But the awards that academics often do win seem to be of a particularly arcane nature, and sorting the wheat from the chaff in that regard seems almost impossible.

Industry awards, on the other hand, seem to usually be of a rather trivial nature (given that the sheer number of awarding bodies, often just industry magazines, is huge). If a company were to win (to take a probably made-up example) the UK Construction Magazine award for the most innovative modular housing solution of 2017, my assumption would be that that is not significant or encyclopaedic info. Some general guidelines I use (which are not codified anywhere, but seem to work well enough): First, is there any verification at all that they even did win such an award? If not, unreferenced material can always be challenged and removed; often these sections are just sprawling "They won this and this and this" without any references at all and can just be removed as unreferenced material. If there is, did any reliable and independent source unaffiliated with both the article subject and the organization which gives the award comment on the significance of the win? True, but in the case of companies, businesspeople and academics the final of those criteria would likely see the removal of the great majority of all awards mentioned in Wikipedia articles. I agree with your general approach (and those detailed above by others) but the problem I will face is essentially as follows:

Suppose a COI edit request details a list of awards that the subject (usually a businessperson or academic) has won and which they would like included in the relevant Wikipedia article. If I go through the awards as you suggest and respond along the lines of "These ones are okay for inclusion, these ones aren't okay" then the COI editor would be perfectly entitled to say "can you point me towards the relevant policy/guidelines on that?" at which point I'd have to admit that there is no real basis for my response and no real grounds for some of the awards to be excluded (unless they are obviously trivial and undue).

Fair point, but that would require an estimation to be made on whether the inclusion of the awards would be undue weight to minor aspects. Unfortunately whether the awards can reasonably be estimated to be minor or major is the fundamental problem.

I'm getting the impression that there are no real guidelines here and that editors use their own common sense when directly editing articles. Sadly I'm not sure that that will assist when dealing with COI editors who wish to include material using criteria other than common sense (typically their criteria will be dominated by "how impressive will this look?" and "how much can I get away with?"). Your use of the phrases "upcoming artist" and "growing artist" indicates that it is far too soon for an article about this artist(musician? Your account has no orher edits so I don't know who you wrote about). Wikipedia is the last place to write about a topic, not the first. Interface question - missing vertical scroll bar in preview

When I am not logged out in, there's an edit summary box at the bottom and when I click preview, it works fine. When I'm logged in, I will get a pop-up after I push publish, then have the "preview" and "publish" button within the popup. The problem is that when I push "preview", the vertical scroll bar is missing. There is a container/rail, but the tab in it is missing, so I can't grab it and scroll and I have to use the scroll wheel on the mouse or arrow keys on the keyboard to scroll. @Graywalls: I'm trying to understand your scenario. "not logged out" is the same as logged in. Did you mean "not logged in"? You only mention "push publish" in one of the situations. Did you mean "push preview"? What does the mentioned pop-up look like? Does it work if you select "Always enable safe mode" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering? Thanks. I have now enabled the 2017 wikitext editor and get the dialogue box. I still didn't see the problem in my standard browser Firefox but I tried Google Chriome and see it there. There are two vertical bars to the right. In Firefox they are side by side and scrolling works normally in the left bar. In Chrome a bar without scrolling is on top of a shorter bar with scrolling which cannot be accessed. The bar on top can be removed with this in your CSS:

Wikipedia is not really a structured database, but our sister project, Wikidata is, and most article subjects in Wikipedia are represented by objects in Wikidata. It's quite easy to use Wikidata for this type of query. Hey, I'm thhat user (as you can see half of my IP matches) but where I am now it's just mobile Internet that keeps changing the IP on a daily basis.

I would say there a very few examples like Torrevieja where this doesn't apply. Valencian has never been spoken in Torrevieja and no one says Torrevella except for some Catalan books.

For Spanish names in Valencian-predominant areas, we know Spanish is still used and many English or foreign sources also use the Spanish name, even if it's not official. Calpe or Jávea are more common from miles away in any language (other than Valencian/Catalan) than Calp or Xàbia despite these last ones being official.

As you saw I didn't try to delete anything from your recent changes including the duality of Valencian names. I am from Valencia too and I like that detailed info. Torrevieja is in the Valencian Community (where Valencian is official), the same than Benissa is in Spain (where Spanish is official), therefore both towns could use an exonym in the correspondent language. The name Torrevella is used by other Valencians, similar to Benisa is used by those who use Spanish. It's a way or matter of respect to both linguistic realities in the Valencian Community. I oppose to this change. The AVL or the IEC have invented these names. Orihuela was once historically Valencian speaking, Torrevieja was never. No one says "Torrevella" except for pro-catalanism Catalonian newspapers and the AVL, you won't find an official source saying that.

Torrevieja was settled only with Spanish-speaking people and it has been like that since the town started to exist. I have left both "Oriola" and "Torrevella" terms as a good willing gesture but they can never be in the infobox nor either in bold text. Even if Valencian is official in the entire Valencian Community, it's NOT in Torrevieja or Orihuela (amongst other places) as public workers here don't require to speak Valencian as in Valencia, for example.

The difference with Valencian speaking towns is that people also speak Spanish there. But in Spanish speaking towns (especially around Murcia) no one speaks Valencian. It's not even mandatory at schools. I'm a Vega Bajense so I know how it is. Vega Bajense (talk) 11:22, 11 October 2024 (UTC)

Hi Vega Bajense, those names have not been invented by the AVL, they exist because Valencian is official in all the Valencian Community and the local people in non-traditional Valencian speaking areas have the right and choice to learn Valencian. As I said it's a matter of respect to keep those names, and the same occurs in traditional Valencian-speaking areas with Spanish (like Benissa). @Packzap: Wikipedia content is based on reliable published sources. In this case the original version at File:LOVE60s.png#filehistory actually had names in the image. Here is a better version. It's still hard to read the precise names but it has to be John Echols at the left and Arthur Lee at top. That's what someone reverted back to [6] after you had changed away from it. Well it's ridiculous to assume one scant promotional image by the record company is labeled correctly when all other sources show the person on the left is Arthur Lee, and thus this photo is labeled incorrectly. Just see the wiki (and photo) for Arthur Lee himself, or the thousands of images of the man from reputable sources like Getty images, https://www.gettyimages.com/photos/arthur-lee, and it's plain as day that the musician Arthur Lee (of African descent) is not captioned correctly in the Wiki photo of the band he lead - Love. @Cullen328: The only ambiguous position is the top name but when the other four are clear, the top name has to refer to the top person. The bottom name John Echols couldn't possibly be meant for the top person. They are both part African-American. In [7] Johnny Echols says "Arthur and I were young and headstrong, having been raised in bi-racial families". The image [8] looks like a photomontage of different photos in different light conditions with the backgrounds cut out. @Packzap: See what happens if Johnny Echols is added to your search: https://www.gettyimages.com/photos/arthur-lee-johnny-echols. Small Text on Mobile Device with Desktop Mode and Web Browser

Earlier today, when I am logged in using my alternate mobile account (User:McClenon mobile), using desktop mode with Google Chrome, my display has gone to small type that is not easy to read (with a good prescription for computer vision glasses) and is sometimes difficult to touch in the right place. What may have been accidentally set, and how can I restore normal size text? I looked at Preferences, and don't see anything that sets the screen small. I have tried Mobile View, and that doesn't help. It is still small, and besides I am in Mobile View, which I don't like (just as User:Cullen328 doesn't like it). I tried logging on from my desktop computer as McClenon mobile, and I am seeing a normal display for the full-size monitor that I use with my real desktop computer. If I read the news online, using Google Chrome, it displays the news pages in normal size. What would I have accidentally set that causes small type to display on a mobile device using Desktop View and a web browser? @Robert McClenon: It might be the appearance settings on the right-hand side of the screen; if you've collapsed it in the past, the menu should be hiding behind the icon at the top of the page. Is there a consensus on how to format possessive links?

Is it preferred to format possessive links like The [[King]]'s or The [[King's]]?

I've read through the MOS, the full linking page, and several help pages. None of them seem to mention the format, and I've definitely seen both used on major pages.

Definitely use The [[King]]'s – not for style reasons, but for technical reasons. The first one links to the article titled King, and the second to King's. As it happens, King's is a redirect to the disambiguation page Kings, but in general it won't exist; e.g., Wikipedian and Wikipedian's. jlwoodwa (talk) 02:26, 11 October 2024 (UTC)

@Stormdew There is discussion of this at Help:Link. One consideration (mentioned on that page) is that [[Batman]]'s renders as Batman's, where the apostrophe s isn't in blue. Piping is needed if you want Batman's and you do have to beware that without the pipe the target page may not be what you want, as in the King example. Where to discuss category loop

I noticed a category loop. Specifically, Category:Primatology ⊂ Category:Biological anthropology ⊂ Category:Human biology ⊂ Category:Humans ⊂ Category:Hominina ⊂ Category:Hominini ⊂ Category:Homininae ⊂ Category:Hominidae ⊂ Category:Apes ⊂ Category:Primate taxonomy ⊂ Category:Primate taxa ⊂ Category:Primates ⊂ Category:Primatology ⊂ Category:Biological anthropology ⊂…, which has length twelve. (There are also overlapping loops, such as one using Category:Biological anthropology ⊂ Category:Anthropology ⊂ Category:Humans instead of Category:Biological anthropology ⊂ Category:Human biology ⊂ Category:Humans.) Because I recall that category loops are discouraged, I figured that I would bring it up in an appropriate talk page in order to create a discussion about how to fix it. (I personally favor changing Category:Primate taxonomy ⊂ Category:Primate taxa to Category:Primate taxonomy ⊃ Category:Primate taxa, but I can see other users preferring alternatives.) My first idea was Portal talk:Biology, but I got a message saying that I shouldn't post there because pages in the Portal talk namespace are not watched by many people. Multiple references to the same source, differing in the inclusion of quotes

I sometimes have, within the same article, multiple references to the same source, differing in the inclusion of quotes. Is there a way to do this without repeating the complete reference? I recall a recent notification about a new referencing tool, designed to support multiple references to the same source, with variations. I can't remember what differences it's designed to support - it may be just differing page numbers. Is that tool ready for use? Is there some other way to do what I need? Thanks! What is the best way to handle a major restructuring of an article?

I'm planning to restructure an article. This will involve multiple editing steps, during which the article will be a mess. What is the best way to do this? Should I copy the article to Draft space, do the restructuring, then select the text of the Draft, copy it, and paste it into the live article, replacing the existing text? A disadvantage of that approach is that the individual editing steps would not be visible in the article's history. Is there a better way? Thanks! Misha Wolf (talk) 11:32, 11 October 2024 (UTC)

You can use {{In use}} for big editing sessions and {{Under construction}} in between sessions, but don't worry too much about article history if you're the only one making the edits. Having a few big edits in the article history has advantages as well as disadvantages, Misha Wolf, so break up the edits in a way that makes sense to you, whether that's several smaller edits or fewer bigger ones.
